TACKLE FOOTBALL FAQ'S

How is the league formed?

McKinney Sports Connection is the sanctioned Youth Tackle Football organization for the City of McKinney. We play other youth tackle football/school-based teams in North Texas in The Texoma Youth Football League. Our tackle football registration is open for McKinney, Allen, Frisco, Plano, and Lovejoy ISD players in grades 2nd- 6th. Students attending the following school districts are ineligible to register with us and must register with the football organization representing their town: Anna, Celina, Denison, Denton, Melissa, Paris, Princeton, Prosper, Sherman, and Van Alstyne.

 How are teams formed?

Individual registration players are placed on a grade-appropriate team based on the high school they’re zoned for. In some cases, grade-level teams are merged. For example: if a certain grade division only has  9 Mckinney Boyd zoned players, 6 Mckinney High zoned platers, and 5 McKinney North Zoned players registered, then the players will form one team. The coach may choose either one of the 3 team names: Lions, Bulldogs, or Broncos. Our goal is to have future high school classmates play together on the same team throughout elementary, middle, and high school. Given the zoning, we know this is not always possible so we are flexible with friend, team, and coach requests.

Are these recreational or select leagues?

Our league is a recreational league. Football is a competitive sport and we make no warranties or guarantees regarding the level of competition in the league each year. Some teams may be experienced/competitive and some may not. Ultimately, we support the growth and development of all players in whichever format is best for them and their families.

What are the coaching requirements?

All coaches are unpaid volunteers and go through a background check each year. We hold a mandatory meeting with the coaches before the season to educate them on the policies, procedures, and expectations for creating a positive learning environment. All McKinney Sports Connection Coaches are required to certify with USA Football each year

Is there a ball-carrying weight limit?

In the Texoma league, the weight limits are (5th/6th)=140; (3rd/4th)= 110; (2nd/3rd)=90.

Are there minimum playing time requirements? We encourage the development of all players whether they be new to the game or skilled and accomplished. There are no mandated playing time requirements. Playing time is decided by the head coach. We expect Coaches to create playing time opportunities for all players. Playing time disputes may be escalated to the Board only after a good faith attempt to resolve with the head coach. We’ve found that it is far more harmful to mandate playing time. Due to the nature of the game, undeveloped or unprepared players can injure themselves or others if placed in a position to block or tackle prematurely. Our focus is to foster a love for the game, teach the fundamentals, and develop each player so they are ready to compete in Middle School and High School.

What does our registration and team fee cover? We are a non-profit organization we operate our football leagues on thin margins. We strive to keep the game affordable while providing the best facilities and platform to play football. The fees cover very expensive turf-field stadium costs, referees, and insurance. None of the players, volunteers, coaches, or board members are paid.
